Potential presidential candidate Mitt Romney has officially taken an anti – online gambling stance which could potentially alienate a significant portion of the voting public who are looking forward to regulated and sanctioned online gambling. An especially outspoken group of voters that have now become alienated by Romney’s apparent disapproval of online gambling is the online poker community, which is estimated to already be in the millions.

The main issue as far as many online poker players are concerned is the fact that many of these players actually make a living from online poker games. These are the professional online poker players and as far as they are concerned if Mitt Romney is elected into the American Presidency it could spell disaster for them. Professional online poker players for the most part have already lost any other way of making a living, thanks to recent global economic recessions, so potentially not being able to make a living through online poker if a certain anti – online gambling politician is elected is definitely not something that online poker players are willing to risk.

There is of course the other side of the coin and that comes in the form of those that are in favour of the anti – online gambling movement because they believe that online gambling promotes deceit and allows poor people to have false hope in something that is inherently far too risky. Romney made his stance clear in front of the Nevada caucuses; a state that has already begun to accept online gambling applications and has already passed state regulation laws, the only step left is federal government approval.

Debates between Romney and Obama should prove to be very interesting, especially as far as the online gambling and online poker issues are concerned, Obama is a poker player himself and, although his administration has not made an official public stance on internet gambling, there is a fairly good chance that the Obama administration may be in favour of regulated online poker. The support of the professional online poker player lobby could be a deciding factor ahead of the next election.
