Online Gambling Issue Could Potentially Influence Upcoming Election

Historically the outcome of a presidential race has often been decided on a number of different issues, some big and some small. Two mainstay issues within any presidential election relates to the economy and more specifically to job creation within the current economic climate. The issue relating to the regulation of online gambling has become one of the hot issues that relate to job creation and the American economy as a whole.

There are a number of very compelling reasons why online gambling is becoming such an important issue in the presidential race between current President Barack Obama and potential presidential candidate hopeful, the conservative Mitt Romney. In Europe and other territories where online gambling is legally regulated by government entities, revenue from online gambling has helped to control deficit issues as well as providing thousands of jobs within the online gambling industry.

Thie issue of regulated online gambling has become a burning issue after the Department of Justice recently handed down three separate indictments against three separate online poker sites namely Full Tilt Poker, Absolute Poker and Poker Stars respectively. The issue concerns a number of professional online poker players who have been relying on online poker sites for their daily living, after the shutdown indictments a these professional poker players were left with no discernible way in which to make a living, thereby adding to and exacerbating the already overburdened unemployment issue.

Interestingly enough President Obama is an enthusiastic poker player so it could be very interesting to see what the potential outcome could be regarding the issue of online gambling, particularly online poker. Democrats seem to be more in favour of online gambling and online poker regulation and many have been actively pushing for regulation. There are currently estimated to be more than ten million online poker players who actively make a considerable living from playing online poker that translates into a number of potential votes that could significantly influence the upcoming election. That is a considerable chunk of political power and the right move by either President Obama or opposition candidate Mitt Romney could win it for one of them.

Push For Online Gambling Could Be Thwarted By Possible Romney Election

Push For Online Gambling Could Be Thwarted By Possible Romney Election

Potential presidential candidate Mitt Romney has officially taken an anti – online gambling stance which could potentially alienate a significant portion of the voting public who are looking forward to regulated and sanctioned online gambling. An especially outspoken group of voters that have now become alienated by Romney’s apparent disapproval of online gambling is the online poker community, which is estimated to already be in the millions.

The main issue as far as many online poker players are concerned is the fact that many of these players actually make a living from online poker games. These are the professional online poker players and as far as they are concerned if Mitt Romney is elected into the American Presidency it could spell disaster for them. Professional online poker players for the most part have already lost any other way of making a living, thanks to recent global economic recessions, so potentially not being able to make a living through online poker if a certain anti – online gambling politician is elected is definitely not something that online poker players are willing to risk.

There is of course the other side of the coin and that comes in the form of those that are in favour of the anti – online gambling movement because they believe that online gambling promotes deceit and allows poor people to have false hope in something that is inherently far too risky. Romney made his stance clear in front of the Nevada caucuses; a state that has already begun to accept online gambling applications and has already passed state regulation laws, the only step left is federal government approval.

Debates between Romney and Obama should prove to be very interesting, especially as far as the online gambling and online poker issues are concerned, Obama is a poker player himself and, although his administration has not made an official public stance on internet gambling, there is a fairly good chance that the Obama administration may be in favour of regulated online poker. The support of the professional online poker player lobby could be a deciding factor ahead of the next election.
